The Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. stocks approximately 9 million fish into about 1,000 lakes and streams throughout the province annually as well as providing conservation fish culture services that support steelhead and sturgeon recovery programs.
Detailed information about individual lakes can be found at the Ministry of Environment's Fisheries Data Queries or Fish Wizard. This site provides information on lake stocking history, depth charts and basic biological facts about a particular waterbody.
You can also download the recent stocking histories of lakes in your region by visiting our Fish Culture section of the website.
Society personnel work with Ministry of Environment regional fisheries staff to manage existing and create new fisheries. We are also developing programs to inform and educate the public about fish.
Freshwater fishing is an important recreational and economic activity. Approximately 400,000 licensed anglers spend $400-500 million on freshwater fishing in B.C. each year. Recent surveys show that about one-half of the angler effort in fresh water takes place on lakes stocked by Society hatcheries.
