Native and domestic rainbow trout
The Summerland Trout Hatchery is the oldest continuously running trout hatchery in BC. The facility was established in 1928, but fish rearing here actually goes back to 1918. This hatchery is the only trout hatchery that relies on spring water as all others in the province use groundwater by way of pumps.
The staff stock fish into approximately 260 lakes annually into the south central regions of BC - Thompson/Nicola, Okanagan and West Kootenays. The Summerland Hatchery also rear fish that are then transferred to the Clearwater Hatchery to be stocked in the Cariboo and Northen Lakes. A second off-site hatchery located in Skaha provides additional rearing capacity for native catchable programs. For a listing of lakes stocked, visit our Stocking Reports section.
Between September and April, an interpretative centre depicting the hatchery program is available. Hours of Operation are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. PST, 7 days a week for self guided tours.
Summer guided tours are available from 10 - 3 pm, including viewing live fish in and outdoors, video, a colouring station for kids and learning where to fish locally.
