We are concerned with the unauthorized transfer of alien or non-native aquatic species into BC's freshwater systems through human activities.
Such illegal transfers whether deliberate or accidental can be devastating to native biodiversity and fisheries.
These impacts can also have direct consequences on recreational uses including angling, swimming and other aquatic activities.
Competition for resources -Yellow Perch compete with wild and stocked trout species for food resources
Predation on native species- Loss of unique Hadley Lake stickleback pairs when brown bullheads were introduced
Introduction of diseases and parasites - Whirling disease can devastate native trout populations
Habitat degradation - Eurasian water milfoil spreads quickly degrading vast areas of aquatic habitat Small Mouth Bass
Impact to Angling Opportunities - Reduced or stopped fish stockings in some of the 90 reported lakes with non-native, spiny-rayed fishes such as Bass (Largemouth and Smallmouth), Yellow perch and Pumpkinseed.
The FFSBC is currently involved in a project that will summarize information pertaining to the presence and impacts of non-native fish species in BC's freshwater systems. This information can be used to develop a formal policy to deal with alien species, and help prevent further introductions in the future.
