About the Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery

The Vancouver Island Trout Hatchery was built in 1993. The hatchery stocks approximately 300,000 fish into 60 lakes, streams, and rivers on Vancouver Island and surrounding islands in the region.

In 2009 the Fish Health Unit was moved to the Vancouver Island Hatchery location. The facility supports several labs including a necropsy, serology, virology, PCR, and a tissue culture lab.

Species Raised

The hatchery is home to the Fraser Valley rainbow trout broodstock, supplying eggs and fry to three other Society hatcheries for their stocking programs.

Location Details

The hatchery is located 1 kilometre east of the Trans-Canada Highway in Duncan, British Columbia.
